Spring Term in Year 2

Year 2 have had a fantastic Spring term. We have learnt about multiplication and division in maths. In English, we have collected adjectives and adverbs to use in our free verse poetry. We have also learnt and practiced skills such as expanded noun phrases and subordinating clauses to then use in a draft write up of a non-chronological report about materials. Once we had done the draft we used our editing skills to improve it, before publishing it.

Our science learning has been learning about materials and their properties. First we went on a materials hunt around school and outside to see which natural and man made materials we could find. The we took samples of materials and tested their properties with a range of experiments. For example we tested durability by rubbing against tree bark, we tested transparency by holding it up to the sun, we tested strength by seeing how many logs it could when we stretched it out as well as other experiments. We then used this knowledge to design and make a hedgehog hotel. We will see how successful these are after the holidays!

In D&T we used our knowledge of wheels and axels to design and make a moving vehicle and in art we explored printing. This learning was extended through our visit to Scarborough Art Gallery. All the children completed their 'Discover' Arts Award. We learnt about different art forms and artist and experimented with many different forms of printing, resulting in some beautiful art work!

We held a Crafternoon and our grown-ups came in to learn about our school values. We made dream catchers and suncatchers.

We celebrated World Book Day and participated in a scavenger hunt around school, looking for famous people that feature in the 'Little People Big Dreams' books.

And finally, we have to mention the amazing school play! Children learnt a many wonderful facts, songs and lines to ensure that they gave an interesting and entertaining performance! Well done Year 2!
